I’ve never owned a horse. I’ve ridden plenty, and even trained one, but I’ve never owned, or even leased my own horse. I don’t have a particularly horse-y family, in real life, but we’re all horse people on the inside. Despite many years of dreaming and scheming, the horse-thing just hasn’t been mine. Until now.
When I learned about the possibility of using draft power on the modern sustainable farm, I realized I could turn my horse dreams into a useful and even essential ingredient in my farmstead plan.
My original hope was to have a pair of Belgians or Haflingers, but I don’t know if we will end up with enough acreage to need such a heavy team. Plus, I would like something I can use for pleasure riding too, so I’m thinking more about the Morgan horse.
